The bottom line
Stripe charges 2.9% + CA$0.30 for each online payment with a Canadian card, with no monthly fee. A month of $10,000 in online sales over 400 orders costs about $410.
In person it’s 2.7% + CA$0.05 per card and CA$0.15 per Interac payment, but you buy a reader and bring your own POS software. Payouts take 3 business days by default, slower than the next-day deposits Square, Helcim and Moneris list.

Who it’s for
- Online businesses. Stripe says you can build a custom checkout or connect it to hundreds of third-party POS systems.
- Businesses with uneven months. No monthly fee means a quiet month costs nothing to keep the account open.
- Developers and software platforms. Stripe is built to be wired into your own website or app.
- Shops that take some in-person payments too. Readers start at CA$79 and debit is a flat CA$0.15.
Who should skip it
- A store or restaurant that just wants a ready-to-go POS. Stripe doesn’t sell its own simple POS app for small shops. You’d need a third-party POS or a custom build.
- Owners who need cash the next day. Default payouts take 3 business days in Canada, and the first one takes 7 calendar days.
- Businesses that sell a lot to buyers outside Canada. International cards add 0.8% online, and currency conversion adds another 2%.
The catch
Disputes cost twice if you fight them. Stripe charges CA$15 when a customer disputes a payment. If you respond, there’s another CA$15, refunded only if you win. Its Smart Disputes service takes 30% of the disputed amount on each case it wins.
International cards cost more. Online, international cards add 0.8%. In person they cost 3.5% + CA$0.05 instead of 2.7% + CA$0.05. If the money has to be converted between currencies, add 2%.
Keyed-in payments cost more. Typing a card number in by hand adds 0.5%, so it’s 3.4% + CA$0.30.
Tap to Pay on a phone adds a fee. Stripe adds CA$0.15 each time a card is tapped on your phone with Tap to Pay.
Payouts are slow. Stripe’s docs list 7 calendar days for your first payout in Canada and 3 business days after that. Instant Payouts cost 1%, with a CA$0.60 minimum.
Amex isn’t listed separately. The Canadian pricing page doesn’t show a separate rate for American Express.
What it costs at your size
These are estimates. They use Stripe’s published rates, no monthly fee, and assume every card is a Canadian card.
Example 1: $10,000 a month online, 400 orders.
- Percentage: 2.9% × $10,000 = $290
- Per payment: 400 × CA$0.30 = $120
- Monthly fee: $0
- Estimated total: $410 a month, an effective rate of 4.1%
The 30¢ per payment adds up on small orders. At an average order of $25, it’s $120 of the $410, close to 30% of your fees.
Example 2: $10,000 a month in person, 400 card payments.
- Percentage: 2.7% × $10,000 = $270
- Per payment: 400 × CA$0.05 = $20
- Estimated total: $290 a month, plus a one-time reader (the BBPOS WisePad 3 is listed at CA$79)
If 10% of the online sales in Example 1 came from international cards, add 0.8% × $1,000 = $8, plus 2% on any amount that needs currency conversion.
