The bottom line
Lightspeed is a full POS system first. You pay for a plan, from $139 a month on Retail Basic or $89 a month on Restaurant Starter, plus 2.6% + 10¢ per in-person card sale through Lightspeed Payments.
At $10,000 a month in card sales over 400 payments, a Retail Basic store would pay about $439 a month. You’re paying for the software, not just for taking cards.

Who it’s for
- Independent retailers who need real inventory tools. Lightspeed says Retail Basic is “designed for essential day-to-day needs for independent retailers.”
- Restaurants that want a full system. Restaurant plans start at $89 a month, and Lightspeed says custom processing rates are available for restaurants.
- Medium and larger stores. The monthly plan is a bigger share of costs for a small shop, and a smaller share as sales grow.
- Owners who want cash fast. Lightspeed says deposits can arrive within a few hours, even on weekends.
Who should skip it
- Small or new businesses. $139 a month is a lot to cover in a slow month. Square has a free plan.
- Businesses that mostly need card payments, not a POS. If you don’t need the POS features, a processor with no monthly plan, like Square or Helcim, avoids the $139.
- Shops with lots of debit. Lightspeed doesn’t publish an Interac rate, so you can’t compare it before you talk to sales.
The catch
Only one rate is published. Lightspeed lists 2.6% + 10¢ for in-person cards. Interac debit, online and keyed-in rates are not on its pricing pages.
Extra fees may apply. Lightspeed’s pricing page says “prices can vary and additional service fees may apply depending on the nature of the business and the industry.”
Restaurant screens cost extra. The restaurant pricing page lists an add-on at $40 per screen a month.
Check the currency. Lightspeed’s retail page showed US dollar prices until Canada was picked in the region selector. Confirm you’re being quoted in Canadian dollars at signup.
Chargebacks. Lightspeed lists a single $15 fee per chargeback. The page doesn’t say which currency.
Contract terms aren’t published. The pricing page offers monthly or yearly billing, but doesn’t publish a contract length or cancellation fee.
What it costs at your size
These are estimates. They use Lightspeed Payments’ published in-person rate of 2.6% + 10¢ and plan prices with Canada selected on Lightspeed’s site.
Example 1: a retail store, $10,000 a month in person, 400 card payments, Retail Basic billed monthly.
- Percentage: 2.6% × $10,000 = $260
- Per payment: 400 × 10¢ = $40
- Retail Basic plan: $139
- Estimated total: $439 a month, about 4.4% of sales
Billed yearly, Retail Basic is $119 a month, which brings the estimate to $419.
Example 2: a restaurant, the same $10,000 and 400 payments, Restaurant Starter.
- Processing: $260 + $40 = $300
- Restaurant Starter plan: $89
- Estimated total: $389 a month, before any $40 screen add-ons
If many of those payments are Interac debit, the real number could be different. Lightspeed doesn’t publish its debit rate, so ask.
Compare these with your current costs in the fee calculator.
