"Most you can pay per lead" is the lead price where profit after leads is zero at your close rate. "Break-even close rate" is the share of reached leads you need to win to cover the month's lead costs.

Every unanswered lead is money spent twice: once on the lead, again on the next one. Field service apps that reply and book for you

The calculator opens with TrustedPros, because its membership is the one Canadian lead price that’s published ($49 to $89 a month, by service area). HomeStars and Bark start empty: HomeStars shows each lead’s fee before you respond, and Bark shows each lead’s credit cost. Put in what you see, or switch a column to another platform.

How the math works

  1. Jobs won = leads per month × the share you reach × your close rate.
  2. Monthly spend = leads × lead fee, less credits you get back, plus memberships and ad budgets.
  3. Cost per won job = monthly spend ÷ jobs won.
  4. Profit after leads = jobs won × job value × margin, minus the monthly spend.

With the example numbers (20 leads, 80% reached, 25% won, $500 jobs, 40% margin), you win 4 jobs. On a $49 membership that’s $12.25 per won job, if the membership really brings 20 leads. Change “Leads per month” to the number you actually get.

Flat membership or pay per lead?

A flat fee beats paying per lead when your per-lead fees would add up to more than the membership. The tipping point is simple: membership ÷ leads per month = the per-lead fee where the two cost the same.

  • At $49 a month and 10 leads, the break-even lead fee is $4.90.
  • At $89 a month and 10 leads, it’s $8.90.

If your HomeStars lead fees run above that, the membership is cheaper per lead. The catch: you pay the membership in a slow month too.

Bark credits, in dollars

Bark’s Canadian help page lists its credit price as $2.70 per credit, and says the rate can vary with the credit pack you buy. A lead’s cost in credits shows on the lead. Multiply the two: the calculator does it for you when you pick Bark and enter credits per lead. Credits expire 3 months after purchase, so buy packs you’ll use.

Where to find your lead fee

  • HomeStars: the fee is shown before you respond and never changes after. It depends on the job details the homeowner enters. HomeStars’ rules
  • Google Local Services Ads: Google doesn’t publish prices; use the cost per lead in your account. How Google charges in Canada
  • Jiffy: no lead fee. Pick Jiffy and enter the commission percentage from your agreement.

Common questions

How do you calculate cost per lead?

Divide what you spent on a platform in a month by the leads it sent. On HomeStars or Google Local Services Ads it's the fee on each lead, less any credits. On Bark it's the credits a lead costs times the credit price. On a flat membership like TrustedPros, it's the monthly fee divided by the leads you got that month.

How do you calculate cost per acquisition for a contractor?

Add up a month's lead fees and memberships, then divide by the jobs you won from those leads. That's cost per won job, or cost per acquisition. It's the fairest way to compare a per-lead platform with a flat monthly one.

Is a flat monthly membership cheaper than paying per lead?

It is once you'd otherwise spend more than the membership on lead fees. If your per-lead fees would total more than the monthly fee, the flat membership wins, as long as it actually brings you that many leads. The calculator shows both side by side.
