The short answer: on eBay.ca most categories pay 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus a $0.40 per order fee ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less), all in Canadian dollars. A buyer in the US adds 0.4%; anywhere else adds 1%. On a $100 sale with free shipping you get $86.00 from a Canadian buyer and $85.60 from a US buyer.

Selling to the US from Canada
eBay charges Canadian sellers an international fee on the whole sale when the buyer is outside Canada, unless the item ships through eBay International Shipping:
| Buyer in | International fee | Total eBay fees | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | None | $14.00 | $86.00 |
| The US | 0.4% | $14.40 | $85.60 |
| Other countries | 1% | $15.00 | $85.00 |
If eBay converts your money between currencies, for example when you list on eBay.com or get paid in a different currency from your listing, it adds a currency conversion charge on top of the exchange rate (see the table further down).

eBay.ca listing fees and Store plans
Without a Store you get 250 free listings a month, then each new listing costs $0.30 in most categories. eBay.ca offers Basic, Premium and Anchor Stores; there is no Starter Store in Canada.
| Plan | Monthly renewal | Yearly renewal | Free fixed-price listings a month | Insertion fee after that |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No Store | Free | Free | 250 | $0.30 |
| Basic Store | $24.95 | $19.95 | 1,000 | $0.20 |
| Premium Store | $74.95 | $59.95 | 10,000 | $0.10 |
| Anchor Store | $349.95 | $299.95 | 25,000 | $0.05 |
Basic and higher Stores also get extra free listings in select categories and lower final value fees in most categories (see the category tables above). Cancelling a yearly Store early costs a third of the remaining months' fees.
Is a Store worth it? In most categories a Basic Store cuts the final value fee from 13.6% to 12.7%. On yearly renewal ($19.95 a month), that saving covers the subscription once you sell about $2,217 a month in those categories (our estimate: subscription divided by the rate difference, before insertion-fee savings). Electronics, computers and cameras save more per sale, so they reach that point sooner.
The fees sellers miss
- eBay charges on shipping and sales tax, not just your price. If the buyer pays $100 for the item, $15 shipping and 13% HST, eBay’s percentage applies to all $129.95.
- Promoted Listings charge the ad rate you pick on the whole sale when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days.
- A Below Standard account pays a surcharge on the next month’s sales.
- Refunds: the per order fee is not credited in most refund cases, and insertion fees are not refunded when an item does not sell (a relisted item that then sells can earn a credit).
| Fee | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| International fee, US buyers (CA-registered seller, not using eBay International Shipping) | 0.4% | delivery or buyer registered address in the US; not charged when using eBay International Shipping |
| International fee, all other countries (CA-registered seller) | 1% | delivery or buyer registered address outside Canada and the US; not charged when using eBay International Shipping |
| Seller currency conversion charge | 3.25% | applied to the base exchange rate whenever eBay converts funds (listing on another eBay site, or payout currency differs from listing currency) |
| Below Standard surcharge | 6% | rises to 7% after 4+ consecutive Below Standard months; not charged to Above Standard / Top Rated |
| Below Standard surcharge, 4+ consecutive months | 7% | as above |
| Very High 'Item not as described' return rate surcharge | 5% | rises to 6% after 4+ consecutive months; not stacked with the Below Standard surcharge |
| Dispute (chargeback) fee | $20.00 | per dispute where the seller is found responsible, excluding sales tax |
| Refunds: per order fee is not credited (seller-caused cancellations, defect/damage returns, item not received, partial refunds, accepted disputes) | Rule | eligible fee credits are proportional to the refunded amount |

Does eBay take 20% of a sale?
