Card fees by app: what your job software keeps from each invoice

Job management apps keep 2.69% to 3.9% of every invoice a Canadian customer pays online by card, plus up to 30¢. On 50 invoices of $400 a month that's $553 to $795, usually more than the software. Only a few publish Canadian rates.

Each app's standard published rate as shown to Canadian visitors; where the app doesn't say whether the fixed fee is in Canadian or US dollars, we show it as published. The invoice and monthly columns assume every invoice is paid by card online at the standard rate (an estimate). Amex, business cards, keyed-in cards and buy-now-pay-later cost more at several apps, below. "Not published" means the app doesn't publish that rate, so we don't guess one.

The worked example (an estimate)

A 5-person crew on Jobber™ Connect (US$199 a month) sends 50 invoices a month averaging $400, and every customer pays online by card. Card fees: 50 × $11.90 = $595 a month, $7,140 a year. With no bank payment option on Jobber in Canada, there’s no cheaper way for those customers to pay through the app. Assumptions: 50 invoices, $400 each, standard cards, no instant payouts, and Jobber’s 30¢ treated as Canadian cents. Put in your own numbers.

Who publishes Canadian rates

  • ServiceM8 publishes Canadian rates that fall as the plan rises: Free 3.3% + 30¢ · Starter 3.1% + 30¢ · Growing 2.85% + 30¢ · Premium 2.69% + 30¢ · Premium Plus 2.69% + 30¢. On a busy account, moving up a plan can pay for itself in card fees.
  • Joist publishes 2.9% + 30¢ in Canadian dollars for Canadian accounts.
  • Tradify’s Canadian page lists 3.1% + 30¢ without naming the currency of the 30¢.
  • Jobber and Housecall Pro show one set of rates and don’t say whether anything differs for Canadian accounts. FieldPulse’s own payments are US only.

Ways to pay less

1. Take payment in person where it’s cheaper. Housecall Pro charges 2.59% in person against 2.99% online. Kickserv’s published in-person rate is 2.9% + 30¢ against 3.9% + 30¢ online (it publishes US rates only).

2. Pass the fee on, where the rules allow. Tradify, Kickserv and Joist let you add the card fee to invoices. Outside Quebec, Canadian businesses may surcharge credit cards within the card networks’ cap and notice rules; Quebec doesn’t allow it, and Interac debit has stricter rules of its own. Read our credit card surcharge guide first.

3. Skip instant payouts. Same-day payouts cost an extra 1% at Jobber and 1% at Housecall Pro.

4. Watch Amex and business cards. Housecall Pro charges 3.49% for American Express and business cards by any method. ServiceM8 charges 3.9% + 30¢ in Canada for international cards and Amex, which is off by default.

5. Use your own processor where the app allows it. GorillaDesk connects to your own Stripe or Square account (the table shows Stripe’s Canadian rate), and Yardbook to your own Stripe account. Compare Stripe, Square and Canadian processors in our payments calculator.

Other fees

  • Disputes: ServiceM8 charges $15 CAD per dispute in Canada. Most apps don’t publish a dispute fee.
  • Refunds: Joist doesn’t return its processing fee when you refund a customer.
  • Currency: if your app bills its subscription in US dollars, your card issuer’s foreign-exchange fee applies to that charge, separate from the card fees your customers’ payments carry.

Common questions

What does Jobber charge for card payments in Canada?

Jobber Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ for cards paid online, the rate it shows Canadian visitors, on every plan. Its page doesn't say whether the 30¢ is Canadian or US for Canadian accounts. Bank (ACH) payments are US only, and instant payouts cost an extra 1%.

Which job apps publish Canadian card rates?

Joist publishes 2.9% + 30¢ CAD for Canadian card payments, and ServiceM8's Canadian site lists rates that fall from 3.3% + 30¢ on its free plan to 2.69% + 30¢ on Premium. Tradify's Canadian page lists 3.1% + 30¢. Most others publish one rate without saying which country it covers.

Can I add a surcharge for card payments in Canada?

Card network rules allow surcharging credit cards in Canada within limits, and Quebec bans it. Some apps let you pass the fee on: Tradify, Kickserv and Joist say so on their pages. Read our credit card surcharge guide before you start.
