The bottom line
At $10,000 a month in credit card sales over 400 payments, Moneris costs about $345 a month. The rate is easy to predict, but the terminal rental and software fee mean a slow month still costs you about $40 before you sell anything.

Who it’s for
- Owners who want a predictable rate. Moneris says its Flat Rate is “the ideal option for businesses that value cost certainty and predictability.”
- Businesses where many customers pay by debit. Interac is a flat 12¢ in person, whatever the size of the sale.
- BMO and RBC customers. Moneris says deposits show up the very next day, even on non-business days, with those banks.
- Businesses that take a lot of Amex. American Express is included in the flat rate.
Who should skip it
- Small or seasonal businesses. The terminal rental and software fee add up to $39.95 a month, even in a month with no sales.
- Online shops that take Interac. Interac costs $1.00 per payment online or in an app.
- Anyone who wants to stay flexible. The agreement runs 3 years, then renews every 6 months unless you give notice.
The catch
You rent the terminal. Moneris doesn’t publish a price to buy the Moneris Go terminal. Two terminals means two rental fees.
The small fees add up. Besides the software fee, Moneris lists a $5 minimum merchant discount rate, a $2 paper statement fee, $2.50 for an aged close batch and 8¢ for dial communications. It doesn’t say how often some of these are charged, and notes that “additional fees may apply for other products and services.”
Chargebacks cost more than at some rivals. Moneris lists $25 per chargeback and $80 for authorization chargeback handling.
The agreement runs three years. The pricing and order pages don’t mention a term, but Moneris’s published merchant agreement terms (April 2025 edition) do. After the first 3 years, the agreement “will automatically renew for successive Renewal Terms of 6 months each” unless you give notice at least 45 days before the term ends. We didn’t find a cancellation fee amount. Ask for it in writing, along with what happens to the terminal rental if you leave early.
The interchange-plus plan has no published markup. Moneris’s Simplified Pricing is interchange-plus, with a markup by quote based on your business type and volume. Its foreign card fee there is “incremental based on assessment fees, up to 1.00%” (0.80% on Flat Rate). Interchange shows as its own line there, so if you qualify for the 2024 small-business cut to Visa and Mastercard fees, you’d see it. On Flat Rate you pay 2.65% + 10¢ either way. Our fee-cut checker shows whether you qualify.
Offline payments are off until Moneris turns them on. Moneris’s developer docs say offline mode on Moneris Go must be enabled by Moneris. The default limit is $250 per sale, with up to 500 stored sales. If your internet is shaky, ask for it at setup, not during an outage.
A change of ownership is coming
Moneris is owned by BMO and RBC today. On August 10, 2026, Moneris announced that Francisco Partners has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire it, with the deal expected to close by the end of the first quarter of BMO and RBC’s fiscal year 2027.
We don’t know what will change after the sale. If you sign now, ask whether your rate and terms are guaranteed, and for how long. On that timeline, most of a 3-year agreement signed today would run under the new owner.
What it costs at your size
These are our estimates on Flat Rate, with $39.95 a month for one rented Moneris Go terminal ($34.95) and the software fee ($5), treated as monthly because Moneris doesn’t say how often it’s billed. They leave out paper statements and other incidental fees.
Example 1: $10,000 a month in person, 400 payments.
- All credit: 2.65% × $10,000 = $265, plus 400 × 10¢ = $40, plus $34.95 + $5 = $39.95. About $344.95 a month, an effective rate of about 3.45%.
- Half by Interac debit: credit 2.65% × $5,000 = $132.50, plus 200 × 10¢ = $20, for $152.50. Debit 200 × 12¢ = $24. Plus $39.95. About $216.45 a month.
Debit is where flat per-payment pricing helps: the 12¢ is the same on a $20 sale or a $500 sale.
Example 2: a small seller, $3,000 a month in person, 120 credit card payments.
- Credit: 2.65% × $3,000 = $79.50, plus 120 × 10¢ = $12, plus $39.95
- Estimated total: $131.45 a month, an effective rate of about 4.38%
At this size the monthly costs are almost half the bill. Square’s flat 2.5% with no monthly fee would be about $75. Moneris’s own Tap to Pay app, below, would be about $85.50.
Example 3: a busy counter, $40,000 a month in person, 800 payments, half by Interac debit.
- Credit: 2.65% × $20,000 = $530, plus 400 × 10¢ = $40, for $570
- Debit: 400 × 12¢ = $48, plus $39.95
- Estimated total: $657.95 a month, an effective rate of about 1.64%
This is where Moneris does well: the average sale is $50, and every debit payment costs 12¢. Square, which charges a percentage on debit, works out to about $678 for the same month. See Square vs Moneris, or compare with what you pay today in the fee calculator.
The terminal over a full term
At the listed price, before any promotion (our estimates):
- One terminal for a year: 12 × $34.95 = $419.40
- One terminal for 3 years: 36 × $34.95 = $1,258.20
- The $5 software fee for 3 years, if it’s billed monthly: $180
- One terminal over the 3-year term: about $1,438.20
A second terminal doubles the rental. A rental promotion doesn’t change this much: a rebate on part of a few months is small next to 36 months of rent.
Rental rebate, not the regular price: 50% of the monthly rental back as a credit, for up to 6 months, paid once you qualify. Who: new and existing merchants adding or upgrading an eligible solution (net new devices only), approved by Moneris, who process at least $5,000 in credit cards in the first 90 days; one rebate per merchant. Ends: December 2, 2026. After: $34.95 a month per terminal. Offer terms
Moneris’s agreement does let you use equipment it didn’t supply, but it must meet Moneris’s specifications and, if required, be certified by Moneris. Our card terminals page compares renting with buying.
Skip the rental: Tap to Pay on the Moneris Go app
Moneris also offers Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android through its free Moneris Go app, at different rates:
- Credit: 2.45% + 10¢, against 2.65% + 10¢ on the terminal
- Debit: 0.70% + 12¢, against a flat 12¢ on the terminal
You still need a Moneris merchant agreement. Moneris doesn’t say whether the $5 software fee applies to the app, so ask.
For Example 2 ($3,000 in credit cards, 120 sales), the app works out to 2.45% × $3,000 = $73.50, plus 120 × 10¢ = $12, for about $85.50 a month. That’s $45.95 less than the terminal setup, before any software fee.
The catch is debit. On the app it’s a percentage, like Square: a $200 debit sale costs 0.70% × $200 + 12¢ = $1.52. The app suits small, credit-heavy sellers. A busy counter with big debit sales may do better with the terminal.
Selling online with Moneris
Moneris charges more when the card isn’t in front of you:
- Online or phone card payments: 2.85% + 30¢
- Interac online or in an app: $1.00 per payment
- Moneris Online (Wix Complete plan): $46 a month billed monthly, or $39 a month billed yearly.
Free trial, not the regular price: the first month free. Who: not stated beyond choosing the monthly plan. Ends: no end date published. After: $46 a month. Offer terms
First-year price, not the regular price: $28 a month for the first year. Who: not stated beyond choosing the annual plan. Ends: no end date published. After: $39 a month from the second year. Offer terms
Example (our estimate): 100 online orders of $60 a month, all by credit card, is $6,000. That’s 2.85% × $6,000 = $171, plus 100 × 30¢ = $30, for $201 in card fees. Add $46 for the monthly Moneris Online plan, for about $247 a month. Stripe lists 2.9% + 30¢ online and Square lists 2.8% + 30¢, both with no monthly fee to take payments.
What to ask Moneris before you sign
Ask these in writing before you commit to a 3-year term:
- What does it cost to cancel before the term ends?
- How often is the $5 Moneris Go software fee billed, and does it apply to the Tap to Pay app?
- How often is the $5 minimum merchant discount rate charged, and when does it apply?
- Does a rental promotion apply to you, and is it taken off the bill or paid back later as a credit?
- If you’d rather have Simplified Pricing, what is your markup?
- If you don’t bank with BMO or RBC, how fast will deposits arrive?
- Will your rate and terms stay the same after the sale to Francisco Partners closes?
Leaving Moneris
Already with Moneris? The date you give notice matters most. You must give notice “at least 45 days before the end of the Initial Term or Renewal Term.”
By our reading of those terms: if your agreement began on June 1, 2025, the first term ends around June 1, 2028, so your notice is due by mid-April 2028. Miss that and you renew to about December 1, 2028, with the next deadline in mid-October.
The Moneris Go terminal is rented, and we didn’t find anything saying it works with another processor. Before you give notice, ask Moneris in writing for your exact term end date, any fee for leaving, and what happens to the terminal rental. Then see what to check before switching on our lower your fees page.

Common questions
How much does Moneris charge per transaction?
On Flat Rate pricing, Moneris lists 2.65% + 10¢ per in-person credit card sale and 2.85% + 30¢ for online or phone payments. American Express is included in the flat rate. Interac debit is 12¢ in person and $1.00 online or in an app. Moneris also offers an interchange-plus plan, priced by quote.
How much is the Moneris terminal rental?
Moneris lists its Moneris Go terminal from $34.95 a month per terminal. It doesn't publish a price to buy one. There's also a $5 Moneris Go software fee, though Moneris doesn't say how often it's billed. Moneris sometimes runs rental promotions. They are temporary, so judge the rental on the $34.95.
Does Moneris have a contract or cancellation fee?
Yes, there is a contract. Moneris's published merchant agreement terms (April 2025 edition) set a 3-year first term, then automatic 6-month renewals unless you give notice at least 45 days before a term ends. We didn't find a cancellation fee amount. Ask for it in writing, and ask what happens to your terminal rental if you leave early.
Is Moneris being sold?
Yes. On August 10, 2026, Moneris announced that Francisco Partners has entered into a definitive agreement to buy it from BMO and RBC. Moneris says the deal is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of BMO and RBC's fiscal year 2027. Prices and terms could change after that.
How fast are Moneris deposits?
Moneris says you can make a deposit and see the balance in your account the very next day, even if it's not a business day. It describes this as working with BMO and RBC accounts. If you bank elsewhere, ask Moneris how long deposits take.
Can I use Moneris without renting a terminal?
Yes. Moneris offers Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android through its free Moneris Go app. It lists 2.45% + 10¢ for credit and 0.70% + 12¢ for debit there, and you still need a Moneris merchant agreement. Debit is a percentage on the app, so big debit sales cost more than the terminal's flat 12¢.
