The short answer: PayPal Canada charges 2.9% + $0.30 on a domestic sale, whether the buyer pays with PayPal, a card or an invoice. PayPal Canada publishes no separate, lower rate for personal goods-and-services payments. A US buyer adds 0.8%, other countries 1%. On a $100 payment from a Canadian buyer you receive $96.80; to receive a full $100, ask for $103.30.

QR code payments are priced by size: 1.9% + $0.10 above $10, and a different rate at $10 or less (both in the table). Advanced card payments need PayPal’s approval and replace the domestic rate with their own rate for US and overseas buyers instead of adding a percentage.

Getting paid in US dollars

If a US buyer pays you in US dollars and PayPal converts the money to Canadian dollars, PayPal builds a 4% spread into the exchange rate on commercial transactions. You don’t see it as a fee, only as fewer dollars. On a $100 payment from a US buyer that is converted, the fees and spread together come to $8.00. The fixed fee also follows the currency you receive:

What to charge to receive a set amount

PayPal takes its percentage from the whole payment, including the part you added to cover the fee. The right price is (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). For a Canadian buyer: $50 needs $51.81, $100 needs $103.30 and $500 needs $515.25. The calculator’s “I want to receive” button works this out for any method and buyer.

Refunds, disputes and payouts

PayPal Canada fees after the sale, from PayPal's own fee page.

Chargeback fee (card transactions not via PayPal account or guest checkout) $20.00
Standard Dispute Fee $20.00
High Volume Dispute Fee $40.00

PayPal keeps its fee when you refund a buyer. PayPal Canada also lists an inactive account fee, charged as the lesser of the fee or your remaining balance.

PayPal brings you no buyers; it only takes the payment. To weigh it against a marketplace or a full store, compare the same sale on every platform or see your own online store’s cost per order.
